Melissa M. Young is a Honduran American artistic leader, educator, and executive advisor whose decades-long career spans performance, curation, teaching, institutional leadership, and executive presence coaching.
A graduate of The Ailey School and an inaugural cohort member of the Ailey Horton Teacher Certification Program, Melissa later deepened her executive acumen through graduate-level certifications in Leadership, Management, and Analytical Skills from Michigan State University's Eli Broad College of Business.
Her 30-year trajectory with Dallas Black Dance Theatre — from company dancer to Artistic Director (2018–2024) — reflects a steady rise as a respected voice in the field. Her performances and artistic influence have appeared on renowned stages including The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, City Center, The Joyce Theater, and two Cultural Olympiads. As Artistic Director, she commissioned over 30 choreographers, forged national and international partnerships, and built a paid virtual programming model that expanded DBDT's reach across more than 40 states and 35 countries.
A respected educator specializing in Lester Horton Technique, Melissa has taught nationally and internationally for universities, conservatories, professional companies, and major festivals. Her service extends to the Texas Commission on the Arts, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Dance Data Project®, and the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture. Her work has been recognized with multiple honors, including DBDT's Dancer's Award for Artistic Excellence, The Talented Tenth, the Shining Star Award, and the "We Speak Your Name" Career Achievement Award.
Today, Melissa works across several interconnected domains — each grounded in her belief that clarity, authority, and artistry are not separate pursuits. They are the same practice, applied differently.
